We are just now beginning to understand the full influences of the Pleiades and the star Alcion.  It is now believed that our Sun orbits the star Alcion, how did the ancients discern this fact?

Arcturus is the brightest star in the constellation Boötes. To the naked eye, it is the brightest star in the northern hemisphere and the fourth brightest star in the night sky, after Sirius, Canopus and Alpha Centauri. However. This makes Arcturus the third brightest individual star, just ahead of Alpha Centauri.

Most of you know that singularly beautiful cluster of stars called the Pleiades—very small, but intensely bright. These are most conspicuous about the time of spring, and hence, in poetry, the vernal influences which quicken the earth and clothe it with the green grass and the many coloured flowers, are connected with the Pleiades. By the sweet influences of the Pleiades we understand, then, in plain language, those benign influences which produce the spring and the summer; these, it is said, no man can restrain. 

Orion, a very conspicuous constellation, with its glittering belt, is best seen towards the close of autumn, just before the coming in of the winter; it is a southern and wintry sign, and hence, poetically, the winter is traced to the bands of Orion, and we are told in the text, literally, that no man is able to loosen the bonds of frost, or check the incoming of the cold. 

In astronomy, the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters (Messier object 45), is an open star cluster containing middle-aged hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky. Pleiades has several meanings in different cultures and traditions.

The cluster is dominated by hot blue and extremely luminous stars that have formed within the last 100 million years. Dust that forms a faint reflection nebulosity around the brightest stars was thought at first to be left over from the formation of the cluster (hence the alternate name Maia Nebula after the star Maia), but is now known to be an unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium that the stars are currently passing through. Astronomers estimate that the cluster will survive for about another 250 million years, after which it will disperse due to gravitational interactions with its galactic neighborhood.

In the Bible the Pleiades are mentioned as Khima (Amos 5:8), and also in Job 38:31 as the Lord speaks to Job. The Lord tells Job that he bound the Pleiades together. Talmud (Bavli, Berakhot, 58a) says that it has about 100 stars.

They are known as kimah in Jewish culture.

According to the Genesis creation narrative, the cosmos created by Elohim has three levels, with the habitable world in the centre, an underworld below and the heavens above. The underworld contains Sheol, the place of the dead, while God has his throne above, and resting on, the heavens.

The Bible names some half-dozen star-groups, but authorities differ widely as to their identity. In a striking passage the Prophet Amos (v, 8) glorifies the Creator as "Him that made Kimah and Kesil", rendered in the Vulgate as Arcturus and Orion. Now Kimah certainly does not mean Arcturus. The word, which occurs twice in the Book of Job (ix, 9; xxxviii, 31), is treated in the Septuagint version as equivalent to Pleiades.

This, also, is the meaning given to it in the Talmud and throughout Syrian literature; it is supported by etymological evidences, the Hebrew term being obviously related to the Arabic root kum (accumulate), and the Assyrian kamu (to bind); while the "chains of Kimah", referred to in the sacred text, not inaptly figure the coercive power imparting unity to a multiple object. The associated constellation Kesil is doubtless no other than Orion. Yet, in the first of the passages in Job where it figures, the Septuagint gives Herper; in the second, the Vulgate quite irrelevantly inserts Arcturus; Karstens Niebuhr (1733–1815) understood Kesil to mean Sirius; Thomas Hyde (1636–1703) held that it indicated Canopus.

Now kesil signifies in Hebrew "impious", adjectives expressive of the stupid criminality which belongs to the legendary character of giants; and the stars of Orion irresistibly suggest a huge figure striding across the sky. The Arabs accordingly named the constellation Al-gebbar, "the giant", the Syriac equivalent being Gabbara in old Syriac version of the Bible known as Peshitta. We may then safely admit that Kimah and Kesil did actually designate the Pleiades and Orion. But further interpretations are considerably more obscure. The Jewish Biblical Commentator Rashi says that Kimah emits cold, and that is what makes winter so cold. However, Kesil emits heat preventing the winter from getting too cold.

Pleiades: The Tzolk'in is the sacred calendar of the Maya and is based on the cycles of the Pleiades. The cycle of the Pleiades uses 26,000 years, that the Sun orbiting Alcyone, the central star of the Pleiades, but is reflected in the calendar we are using by encompassing 260 days. Their calendar year began when the Maya priests first remarked the asterism rising heliacally in the east, immediately before the sun's dawn light obliterated the view of the stars. In the beginning, the Maya understood that they came from the Pleiades, or “Tzab-ek", (Rattlesnake's tail), as they are known by the Maya. The relationship with the Pleiades and the Mayan world is written in the sacred books of the Maya. It is in the consciousness of the grandmothers and grandfathers who had it passed on to them. It is an important record.

The elders say the universe comes from the Pleiades. With the Hubble Telescope, it was discovered about ten years ago, that there is a place where stars are born in a great spiral that originates at the site of the Pleiades, outside of the spiral is complete empty space. In coordination with the galactic precession, the Mayas also look at the precession of time through the Pleiades. Alcyone, the central star of the Pleiades, is located at 30 degrees from Taurus, near the constellation Orion. Alcyone, in Taurus, represents the Earth Goddess. The lessons from Alcyone are those dealing with compassion, higher wisdom and vision, and Earth consciousness. Much has been channeled from the Pleiades.

Alcyone figures prominently in Mayan astronomy. The Mayas believe it is the home of their ancestors. The Pleiades star system is referred to as the seven sisters and our sun aligns with Alcyone every 52 years. In Mayan cosmology the precession of the Pleiades is tracked using the Calendar Round (52 years) and the New Fire ceremony. In the Early Preclassic Site of Ujuxte, in the Pacific Lowlands, the central plaza appears to have a celestial alignment that coincides with the rise and fall of the Pleiades, This is also right for the Stelas and Altars from Monte Alto. The present-day Maya in Guatemala, make use of the Pleiades to begin their planting for the year.

However, a number of researchers believe that the length of the 260 day component of the Calendar Round cycle is defined by a 260 day period from one zenith transit of the sun until the next. In the zone between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn there are days on which the sun passes directly overhead at local noon. Vertical objects at that time cast no shadow. On the Tropic of Cancer there is a single such day, June 22, the summer solstice. On the Tropic of Capricorn the day is December 22, the winter solstice. On the equator the zenith transits of the sun divide the year into two equal halves. Between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer, the zenith transits of the sun divide the year into a longer portion with the sun transiting to the south of the zenith, and a shorter portion with the sun transiting to the north of the zenith. The zenith transit days are always equidistant from the summer solstice. .A 260-day zenith transit interval occurs at a latitude of 14°47’21”. The transit dates are April 30 and August 13. That August 13 is one of the classic Maya creation days lends credibility to this interpretation.
